Amazon Kindle2 “In Stock” and Shipping Now!

by wildcherry on Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 | News, Tech/Gadget

Amazon was already prepping the earliest Kindle 2 orders for shipment, but now we’re seeing a flood of shipment notifications head our way. So far as we can tell, the second iteration of the Kindle e-reader is shipping en masse, and Amazon even lists the thing as “In Stock” on its website. Of course, the original Kindle had that status for about 3.87 (okay, 5.5) hours before slipping into back order land for far too long, but we’re hoping the supply chain’s a bit more ready for the rush this go ’round.

Better start checking your order status, kids — Amazon’s Kindle 2 has started shipping a couple days before the February 24 launch date. Of course, it’s Sunday, so we’d bet these things actually ship tomorrow and arrive on Tuesday as promised, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting — and even better, our tipster wasn’t a preferred Kindle 1 owner, so it looks like even new orders are due to arrive on time. Fingers crossed!

I like gadgets but I’m typically a later adopter then this.

I anxiously awaited this K2 and couldn’t pass up the chance to get one. Have used it for about a week and didn’t have or try a K1.

    Cons:

Screen is a little more grey than i expected for lower contrast.

Fwd/Back buttons are slightly harder to push then expected.

Menu/Filling System seems too simplistic. Books/Magazines are simply menu’d from most recent to latest.

Processor speed seems a little slow when scrolling through menus and text (it is easy to get ahead of your selection)

Periodical subscriptions I have checked out lack extensive menus (like i tried the AZ Rep and Forbes) and graphics. AZ Republic will list 9 articles in sports but i’ve gotta scroll through all to find subject matter. Nice way to get the paper w/o ads but seems a little weak for a paid subscription.

Shows % read but not pages…probaly because this changes w/text size but i have a hard time knowing just how many more pages there is to read.

    Pros:

NO monthly fee for portable wireless device. To me this is HUGE. I hate being $20-$60 / month nickled and dimed to death. Way conveinient way to get books and subscriptions just about anywhere in the country. This is the only reason I looked at the device to start with.

Form factor, size and weight seems really good. The screen may look small but when you only have to push a button instead of wrestling with pages it is a cinch. It really makes a book seem old fashioned. Way easy to read while you eat and just about anything else. Low eye strain and adjustable text are awesome.

If you like reading made ultra convenient this is the device for you. If you are only into wiz bang I-Phone type devices then this may seem un-sexy but try a friends for a day…and if you are really a “reader” then you will appreciate the K2! You might enen love it like me.

PS I recommend the amazon leather cover at ~$30. Snap in fit to the sides really works for me…and easy removal if you like that way.
