October 16th is National Bosses Day. Instead of writing an article to tell you to write greeting cards or poems for your boss, I want you to learn on how this day started.

What is National Bosses Day?

This is a day that offers the employees an opportunity to express their gratitude and appreciation towards their boss, managers, supervisors or CEO on October 16, each and every year. (It is also a day that you might be able to act out some passive-agressive behavior if you play your cards right too.)

History and Origin of National Bosses Day

The history and origin behind the begining of Bosses Day comes from a pretty common place, a place with a great history of “big Bosses”, Chicago. However, this holiday was not created by Al Capone, but by Patricia Bays Haroski.

Patricia Bay Haroski created Bosses Day on October 16, 1958. She was an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Ill. That October 16th, in honor of her Boss she registered the holiday with the Chamber of Commerce of the United States.

Well, apparently she was an appreciative daughter. Patricia, who worked under her own father, noticed the ups and downs and struggles that her father had to go through to run the company but still managed to remain optimistic and encouraging, always giving good advice to all his employees. October 16 was the birthday of Patricia Bays Haroski’s father, and she though it would be a fitting tribue to her favorite boss, in every sense of the word.

To Patricia’s suprise, four years later, Illinois Governor, Otto Kerner, observed National Bosses Day and officially proclaimed the day in 1962. The idea became popular across the country in no time and soon, even England, Australia and South Africa started celebrating Boss’s Day in full throttle. Now, forty seven years later, we are celebrating National Bosses Day 2009.
