Susan Boyle’s popularity shows no signs of dying down: The Britain’s Got Talent runner-up is releasing her first album Nov. 23, and it has already broken Amazon’s record for most pre-orders, the New York Daily News reports. “Although it’s normal to see early enthusiasm for artists who have come off of television shows, the response from our customers to Susan Boyle’s upcoming album has been unprecedented,” says an Amazon exec.

Regarding her makeover decision, she commented:

“I was fed up with being called that.” Boyle says of the “Hairy Angel” nickname she got stuck with once she shot to instant international fame. “I didn’t know what I looked like on television until I saw myself on Britain’s Got Talent. I saw this wee wifey with the mad hairdo and the bushy eyebrows and said, ‘Hmmm, not really telegenic.’ So, I decided to spruce myself up a bit. When I look in the mirror now, I see this sophisticated lady. I’m still a bit like that wee wifey inside, but more refined in some ways. I think any woman would have done the same. Would you want to look like the Hairy Angel? I don’t think so.” the singer says of her makeover.

“She looks 10 years younger,” said Toni Jones, assistant fashion editor at The Sun tabloid newspaper, which featured the new look Boyle on its cover Friday.

“Compared to what she had, it’s a 200 percent improvement. But our readers think this is as far as she should go. We want her to stay one of us.”

“It’s got massive implications for her because the people above her want her to look ordinary,” said Jones, who praised Boyle for spending 35 pounds ($51) at a salon near her home in Scotland rather than trekking to London for a 200 pound ($295) cut at a celebrity salon.

Jones said she was amazed at the interest generated by Boyle’s new do and warned the singer against going too far by adding, for example, the hair extensions and fake tans favored by England’s WAGs, as the pampered wives and girlfriends of Britain’s elite professional athletes are known.
