Today’s Google Logo: Popeye the Sailor Man to celebrate E. C. Segar’s birthday

Today, Google features “Popeye the Sailor Man” as its logo on its homepage:
The Google is celebrating the birthday of the great legendary Elvis Crisler Segar, the creator of Popeye cartoon series. He was born on 8th December 1894 and died in 1934 when he was 43 year old due to liver disease.
Popeye the Sailor is a fictional hero famous for appearing in comic strips and animated films as well as numerous television shows. Popeye first appeared in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929. The Popeye show was taken over by his assistant Bud Sagendorf and he continued the comic cartoon show for several years.
Popeye, the Sailor was popular for its funny characters and comedy. After the successful launching of Popeye, Segar later on launched more characters like Brutus, Wimpy.

It’s a bit problematic to say that Segar launched Brutus. Segar created the character of Bluto, but King Features Syndicate did not remember this, and thought that he was a creature of the Fleischer Studios. Under the arrangement with Paramount, this would have made Bluto a Paramount property. So KFS told Sangendorf to create a Bluto-clone, who was named “Brutus”. Later, when it was discovered that Bluto had been created by Segar, Brutus was taken to be an alias for Bluto.
