What is Diabetic ketoacidosis?

Diabetic ketoacidosis is caused by a serious complication in diabetes; according to the Mayo Clinic, diabetes ketoacidosis develops when the body is not receiving enough insulin. There are a number of symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis which often develop quickly.

Symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis may develop within 24 hours; symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis include:

  • confusion
  • nausea and vomiting
  • constant need to drink
  • constant urge to urinate
  • weakness
  • exhaustion
  • lack of appetite
  • difficulty breathing

    As a diabetic I want to go into more detail on this topic because this condition is from not taking your medicine or not knowing you have diabetes.

    A lot of the symptoms that are quoted above come on gradually and are normal signs of diabetes, but one or two symptoms wouldn’t lead you to think you were anywhere near the coma state that occurs with ketoacidosis. For instance, thirsty and tired wouldn’t lead most people to think they have diabetes unless it was an everyday occurrence.

    Whereas, confusion with the added symptoms of nausea and vomiting and the constant need to drink would be a red flag to call 911.

    This is why a detailed article, with proper instruction and a community knowledge of diabetes is always needed.
