Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe

by nate on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 | Beauty, Life | No Comments

Grand Canyon Suite is a suite for orchestra by Ferde Grofe, composed during the period from 1929 to 1931. Paul Whiteman and his band gave the performance of the public for the first time to work, initially titled ‘five photographs of the Grand Canyon’, in concert at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago on November 22, 1931.

And just to develop a greater sense of the content of this orchestra, and movements of five of the Grand Canyon suite entitled ‘Sunrise’, ‘Painted Desert’, ‘on the Trail’, ‘Sunset’ and ‘Storm’.

• Sunrise opens with a representation of the moment of dawn in the valley. A sense of peace is present, and a sense of still air, from a place owned by nature. Mount gradually hear the sun in the sky, even the joy of advertising fullorchestra announce the arrival of the last day a wonderful and exquisite. Two major issues presented music is: The first, announced Piccolo, opens with a four-note motive (s # # everyone B) which will appear later inthe work in various aspects, and the second appears in the strings. After the trill of Piccolo, descending notes that follow reflect the canyon wren call applied on a large scale, but not often seen songbird common in the southwest Valley and the desert.

• The Painted Desert is a watercolor of the sensitivity and accuracy of impressive. Grofé runs indicate the presence of some ageless, and change of life still exists in a barren desert with no life in it, and what appears to be the wonderful, and sometimes stunning colors of rock formations, and works of art from prehistoric geological. Ingenious use of ropes for the tone and the orchestra and plentiful.

• In the Trail is the best known of the movements of the Grand Canyon Suite, in the report of the ears of the day riding on a donkey pack (imitating the clip clop), and ends with a great start, “hee-haw.” Cadenza and violinist is used to great effect. The main theme of this movement, which was provided by the centuries, and later, trombone, is a major motivator for the suite.

• Sunset is to make the nostalgic and pleasantly sentimental of the most glorious moments of the Grand Canyon, when the sky is alive with vibrant colors over the shadows deepen in the gorge, great.

• Storm opens with a sleepy recollection of the subject “on the road” in the upper strings. Then enter into a combination, a kind of panoramic view of the breadth of this western landscape, with brief references to other subjects inthe work. That this scene comes suddenly dark, and the rush of clouds and wind and altitude. A lone cello solo refers to a state of fear. Evening air is filled with soft sand and hot spare, in the form of a strange violin glissandi slow. Breaks the storm and lightning, thunder and pelting rain. And then more rapidly, it is gold, with another incident of lightning and loud thunder. The moon appears from behind the clouds and the earth rejoice at the pleasure refreshed in the end, climate dramatically.

6 Easy Do-It-Yourself Steps for Weight Loss Programs

by nate on Monday, February 15th, 2010 | Beauty, Health, Inspiration, Knowledge, Life, Tips | No Comments

Despite the way it feels, losing weight isn’t a mysterious process. It’s a simple matter of burning more calories than you eat. But, if it were really that simple, none of us would have a weight problem, would we? Weight loss can be such a struggle that we start thinking we have to do something drastic to see results – diets, pills or those weird fitness gadgets on infomercials that promise instant success. The true secret to weight loss is this: Make small changes each and every day and you’ll slowly (but surely) lose those extra pounds. The key is to forget about instant results and settle in for the long run.

1) Weigh yourself daily

Why It Works: Weekly weigh-ins are a staple of many popular weight loss programs, but some studies show that daily weighing can be key to lasting weight loss. When researchers at the University of Minnesota monitored the scale habits of 1,800 dieting adults, they found that those who stepped on every day lost an average of 12 pounds over 2 years (weekly scale watchers lost only 6) and were less likely to regain lost weight. Step on the scale first thing every morning, when you weigh the least. Expect small day-to-day fluctuations because of bloating or dehydration, but if your weight creeps up by 2% (that’s just 3 pounds if you weigh 150), it’s time to skip dessert.

2) Keep TV viewing under 2 hours a day

Why It Works: TV junkies miss out on calorie-burning activities like backyard tag with the kids; instead, they become sitting ducks for junk-food ads. One study found that adults who watch more than 2 hours of TV per day take in 7% more calories and consume more sugary snacks than those who watch less than an hour a day. Wean yourself off the tube by introducing other activities into your life. Eliminate the temptation to watch between-show filler by recording your must-see programs so you can fast-forward through the ads. Or subscribe to a mail-order DVD service like Netflix, and make a movie the only thing you watch all day.

3) Eat 4 g of fiber at every meal

Why It Works: A high-fiber diet can lower your caloric intake without making you feel deprived. In a Tufts University study, women who ate 13 g of fiber or less per day were five times as likely to be overweight as those who ate more fiber. Experts see a number of mechanisms through which fiber promotes weight loss: It may slow down eating because it requires more chewing, speed the passage of food through the digestive tract, and boost satiety hormones. To get 25 g of fiber a day, make sure you eat six meals or snacks, each of which contains about 4 g of fiber. For to-go snacks, buy a piece of fruit; it’s handier than vegetables, so it’s an easy way to up your fiber intake. One large apple has just as much fiber (5 g) as a cup of raw broccoli.

4) Sleep at least 7 hours a night

Why It Works: A University of Chicago study found that people deprived of Zzzs had lower levels of the hormones that control appetite. “The research suggested that short sleep durations could be a risk factor for obesity,” says James Gangwisch, Ph.D., an epidemiologist from Columbia University Medical Center. Sure enough, his follow-up study of 9,588 Americans found that women who slept 4 hours or less per night were 234% more likely to be obese. The key number for most people is 7 hours or more a night, he says, so set an early bedtime and stick to it.

5) Drink 8 glasses of water per day

Why It Works: Water is not just a thirst quencher–it may also speed the body’s metabolism. Researchers in Germany found that drinking two 8-ounce glasses of cold water increased their subjects’ metabolic rate by 30%, and the effect persisted for 90 minutes. One-third of the boost came from the body’s efforts to warm the water, but the rest was due to the work the body did to absorb it. “When drinking water, no calories are ingested but calories are used, unlike when drinking sodas, where additional calories are ingested and possibly stored,” explains the lead researcher, Michael Boschmann, M.D., of University Medicine Berlin. Increasing water consumption to 8 glasses per day may help you lose about 8 pounds in a year, he says, so try drinking a glass before meals and snacks and before consuming sweetened drinks or juices.

6) Stick to an 8-hour workday

Why It Works: A University of Helsinki study of 7,000 adults found that those who’d packed on pounds in the previous year were more likely to have logged overtime hours. Lack of time for diet and exercise is most likely the cause, but it’s also possible that work stress has a direct effect on weight gain through changes in hormones like cortisol. Set firm limits on your workday so that when you’re done, you still have the oomph to take a bike ride and cook a healthy dinner. To help you stay productive enough to finish on time, set an hourly alarm; when it goes off, deal with your most pressing duties.

The Color of Flowers and Their Meaning

by nate on Friday, February 5th, 2010 | Beauty, Inspiration, Knowledge, Life, Tips | No Comments

Based upon color research, and Ingrum’s years of experience, here is what message is sent when choosing a specific color:

White - Purity, innocence, perfection, hope
White flowers are gorgeous, unique, and non-traditional. They are perfect for a new relationship or for demonstrating your love is pure.

Red - Love, passion, desire, eroticism
Red is traditionally the color of love and romance. A dozen long-stemmed red roses are the classic romantic gift.

Dark Red - Beauty and Love
This is the perfect color to send to let your partner know how truly beautiful they are, while demonstrating how much you truly love them.

White & Red - Unity, togetherness, long-lasting love, bonding
Red and white flowers are a striking combination and they embody all of the feelings and emotions of a true bond.

Pink - Romance, sweetness, playfulness, gladness
Pink is a feminine color perfect for those fun, playful couples. Whether it’s pink roses or lilies, it’s perfect for the sweet, romantic person in your life.

Yellow - Friendship, joy, happiness
Yellow is the traditional color of friendship. With roses traditionally being a romantic flower, you may want to choose gerbera daisies or dahlias that reflect your appreciation.

Yellow & Red - Falling in love, start of a new romance
The yellow symbolizes your current friendship while red shows that you are interested in moving towards a relationship.

Coral - Desire, love
Coral is a shade of love, but more importantly, desire. Sending coral roses to your partner lets them know how much you really want them.

Purple/Lavender - Enchantment, unique, noble, devotion
Purple is the color of true devotion. Sending this color lets them know how truly unique they really are. Often associated with nobility, it’s a perfect color for a long-standing romance.

Top Weirdest Body Health’s Clues and Its Prevention

by nate on Friday, January 15th, 2010 | Beauty, Health, Knowledge, Life, Tips | No Comments

Finger Length

Women whose index fingers are shorter than their ring fingers may be twice as prone to osteoarthritis in the knees, found a 2008 study in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism. Those with this predominately male characteristic tend to have lower levels of estrogen, which may also play a role in the development of osteoarthritis, say researchers.

Prevent it: Strengthen the muscles surrounding your knees. While sitting, straighten each leg parallel to the floor 10 times; hold each rep for 5 to 10 seconds.

Height

Women taller than 5-foot-2 may be missing a gene mutation that helps them reach their 100th birthday, according to a study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Prevent it: Take a page from the habits of California’s Seventh-day Adventists, who have one of the highest concentrations of centenarians: Quit smoking, and cut back on alcohol and eating meat.

Leg Length

If your legs are on the stocky side, you may need to take better care of your liver. In a 2008 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, British researchers found that women with legs between 20 and 29 inches tended to have higher levels of four enzymes that indicate liver disease. Factors such as childhood nutrition may not only influence growth patterns, but also liver development well into adulthood, say researchers.

Prevent it: Avoid exposure to toxins your liver has to process, which will keep it healthier, longer. Wear a mask and gloves while cleaning or working with any type of harsh chemical. Limit alcohol intake to one 5-ounce glass of wine or 12-ounce bottle of beer daily.

Sense of Smell

Older adults who couldn’t identify the scent of bananas, lemons, cinnamon, or other items were five times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease within 4 years, according to a 2008 study in the Annals of Neurology. The researchers believe that the area of the brain responsible for olfactory function may be one of the first impacted by Parkinson’s disease — somewhere between 2 and 7 years prior to diagnosis.

Prevent it: Take fish oil supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids can boost your brain’s resistance to MPTP, a toxic compound responsible for Parkinson’s.

New Year’s Resolution: Tapeworm Diet, Will You Do It?

by nate on Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 | Beauty, Health, Knowledge, Life, Tips | No Comments

At around end of year, many people, especially in US, are busy preparing their New Year Resolution. And for the last several years, “Diet” has been one of the most popular New Year Resolution’s choice. The term I’m about to mention is kinda weird, but some people say it’s natural, especially after this topic was aired on “Tyra Banks Show”: Tapeworm Diet. Are you interested? Read below…

Some women in more developed nations are willingly putting these parasites into their bodies to drop a few pounds. Eating cabbage soup for two weeks. Exercising three times day. Drinking water with lemon juice and cayenne pepper for 10 days. We can all admit to going to great lengths, even if just once, to lose those unwanted pounds. But the Tapeworm Diet has to get as extreme and desperate as the world of dieting tricks and methods come. The good news is that importing or selling tapeworms in the U.S. is illegal. Tapeworms though, do occur in undercooked beef or raw meat dishes which are prone to contamination. The tapeworm diet involves ingesting a parasite so you can eat more.

The “tapeworm diet” is making its rounds on the Internet this afternoon, as a “Tyra Banks Show” episode that aired in November makes an encore appearance. On that show, the model-turned-TV-personality interviewed women who said they would willingly ingest a yellowish worm (likely in egg form, rather than its yards-long full-grown counterpart) in order to lose weight.

PRO

  • Weight loss is pretty much guaranteed
  • A scientist in Japan believes that tapeworms can also help clear up allergies like hay fever

CON

  • Can be deadly
  • Banned by the FDA
  • Medical intervention may be needed to get rid of the tapeworm
  • There are side effects to having a tapeworm
  • Can’t purchase or import one
  • Once you get rid of the tapeworm, you risk putting weight back if you continue eating like you have a tapeworm

DIET & NUTRITION

The Tapeworm Diet is anything but a diet. Since a sizable percentage of what you eat goes to the tapeworm, it’s a virtual dieter’s dream: eat whatever you want and lose weight. Taking extra vitamins during an infection might help to prevent the massive nutrient loss. Following an infection, all those lost pounds can be easily put back on if you don’t follow a healthy eating plan for just you and not your parasite.

TREATMENT

Treatment for getting rid of a tapeworm varies from grotesque to the less grotesque. A strong course of antibiotics is prescribed to get rid of the tapeworm.

CONCLUSION

Now, after reading a brief about the Tapeworm Diet, are you gonna try it? I’d suggest to ask your doctor or your health consultant before you really do it.

The Top Five Holiday Fashion Mistakes

by nate on Friday, December 18th, 2009 | Beauty, Fashion, Knowledge, Life, Tips | No Comments

Learn how to avoid common holiday fashion mistakes and look your prettiest this year:

Wearing Too Much Glitz
Beading, metallic and shimmer are all fine for the holidays. In fact, most women wait until a good party to break out all of the glitzy finery. But too much shine can overwhelm anyone, especially if you wear it in areas that you don’t necessarily want to highlight (like a beaded chest sweater for a busty gal).

Showing Too Much Skin
Thigh-high miniskirts and cut-to-the-navel dresses may look great on the runway, but in reality they are almost impossible to carry off. Not only is it possible to dress sexy while leaving lots to the imagination, it’s also the best way to look your prettiest for the holidays. The secret here is to accentuate your best features with a suggestion: a lace trimmed camisole under a blazer hints at great cleavage, a small slit on a skirt gives a glimpse at gorgeous legs, a halter dress shows off toned arms.

Getting Caught With Nothing to Wear
Nothing is worse than being invited to a fabulous party and having nothing to wear. By keeping a few dressy basics in your closet you can always be prepared for last-minute invitations. You can even re-wear the items and make them look totally different just with accessories.

Making It Too Complicated
No wonder women approach the holidays with dread: trying to coordinate outfits, gifts, travel and parties can overload even the most organized woman.
Instead of trying to match up dressy separates, try a little black dress this season. Not only is it universally flattering, it will take you to almost any event in style. Just add accessories and you’re set.

Being Under or Over Dressed
You show up in jeans, everyone else wears velvet; you wear a long dress and others wear business clothes. You’re not alone if you have trouble deciphering dress codes on a party invitation: most people get confused by designations as ambiguous as “Dressy Casual” or “Cocktail Attire.” A few dressy items span several categories — such as the little black dress for her or dark suit for him — both of which can attend everything from semi-formal to cocktail parties.

Money May Not Buy You Happiness, But Beauty Certainly Will

by nate on Thursday, December 17th, 2009 | Beauty, Knowledge, Life, Tips | No Comments

A new study has actually proven that the women’s magazines were right — so long as you live in the city. But if you’re a country girl, it’s more of a case of “pretty is as pretty does.”

Researchers have found that happiness for city women is quite dependent upon physical appearance. But in the country, looks don’t count for much in terms of overall life satisfaction and happiness, according to a new study in the journal Personal Relationships.

“City women who were the most attractive got a lot of bang for their appearance buck,” says the study’s lead author, Victoria Plaut, a visiting assistant professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, and an assistant professor at the University of Georgia. “And if you were even slightly below average, you were very clearly worse off.”

When it came to women living in the country, there was no connection between physical appearance and happiness. Even more interesting — there was a slight trend in the data for women in the country to be happier if they were chubbier, Plaut says.

For the new study, Plaut and her colleagues interviewed 257 women who lived in the city and 330 from the country. The women were asked to rate their satisfaction with life, their connectedness with friends and community, and their general level of happiness. For a measure of satisfaction, they were asked to rate their lives on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being “worst possible life you can imagine” and 10 listed as the “best possible life you can imagine.”

To get a sense of the women’s attractiveness, researchers asked for waist and hip measurements. Other studies have shown that the ratio of waist to hips is a reliable indicator of attractiveness, Plaut explains. The lower the ratio, the slimmer the waist — and the more attractive a woman is considered to be.

It’s enough for parents of teen (and younger) girls to spend their hard-earned cash on the rafts of Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus merchandise that flood the market. So imagine their agony when their little children come to them and ask them to shell out for a $100 face cleanser.

Caring for Oily Face

by makeupgirl on Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 | Beauty, Life | 1 Comment

If you’re trying to deal with oily skin, keep your chin up. There’s a silver lining, albeit an oily one. They say oily skin tends to age better, with less dryness and fewer wrinkles over time.

  • One challenge with oily skin is avoiding the urge to over-cleanse, which can confuse the heck out of skin, making it either crank up the oil production or swing between oily and excessively dry. Experts recommend avoiding alcohol-based cleansers, which can strip the skin. Instead, reach for gel cleaners and wash no more than twice a day. I may also use a gentle exfoliating product, but not more than once a week.
  • Even though moisturizer might seem like the last thing oily skin needs, think twice about skipping it. Oily skin gets thirsty, too. Don’t forget to moisturize your neck and decollete, as these areas show the first signs of aging. When my skin was uber-oily a few years ago, I liked light oil-free moisturizers without rich mineral oils and cocoa butter.
  • I’ve always been pretty good about wearing sunscreen, but many are oil-based and can worsen oily skin. I opt for non-greasy, broad spectrum sunscreens with a minimum SPF 15.
  • When my skin’s all about the oil, I reach for oil-free makeup, particularly foundations and powder. I like to use a makeup primer under my foundation, and if I’m using a cream blush, then I’ll top them off with a similar shade of powder blush. Same goes for my eyeshadows, too.
  • When I get breakouts with oily skin, I’ll use cleansers and toners with salicylic acid. My skin tolerates SA better than any other topical acne treatment.
