Surfing with Animal: Pisco the Alpaca (PICTURE)
by bintangkecil on Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 | News, Weird, World | No Comments
Pisco the alpaca rides on a surfboard with Peruvian surfer Domingo Pianezzi, at San Bartolo beach in Lima.
Pianezzi is something of a specialist in the - admittedly small - field of surfing with animals. He’s spent the best part of a decade training dogs to sit on his surfboard while he catches the waves, and has also trained a cat called Nicolasa to do the same. But now he’s moved up to an even bigger animal.
‘I’ve surfed with a dog, a parrot, a hamster and a cat, but when I was at a competition in Australia I saw people surfing with kangaroos and koalas,’ noted Mr Pianezzi.
Pisco is thought to be the first alpaca who has ever been taught to surf. Of course, if you know of any previous surfing alpaca incidents, please feel free to let us know.
Pisco wears a floatation jacket while on the board, given that alapacas - mountain animals bred for their warm, silky coats - are not natural swimmers.
Teacher Calls His Student a “LOSER” on Her Paper
by bintangkecil on Saturday, March 13th, 2010 | News, Weird | 2 Comments
Rex Roland, a sixth grade teacher at Enka Middle School in North Carolina, is in trouble for calling his student a Loser on her paper.
Rex Roland, said he was joking when he called one of his students a ‘loser‘ on her paper, but her mother Patty Clement does not see it that way.
She wants Rex Roland to be suspended.
This is not the first time Mr. Roland has called that student a loser either. Back in November he also wrote ‘loser’ in red ink on the girl’s paper and this time he wrote ‘minus 20% for being a loser‘ and then underlined ‘loser’ twice.
ABC has a video report of the story:
Patty Clement complained about the conduct in November when it happened the first time, but now it has happened again, she wants Rex Roland to be suspended.
The Buncombe County School District released a statement saying the matter was being looked in to and the principal and Mr. Roland have met with Ms. Clement but says that it is not enough. She wants teachers to inspire, not break down children.
Rex Roland has been teaching at the school for 12 years, but Ms. Clement removed her daughter from his class. Some parents said Mr. Roland was just trying to relate to his students but no one would go on record in his defense.
Shamu ‘The Killer Whale’ kills Trainer at SeaWorld Orlando (Video)
by wildcherry on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 | News, Weird | No Comments
Visitors ushered out of Sea World Orlando when the siren went off. Many of the Sea World employee are running around to make sure people are out of the Sea World theme park. The cause of this hectic scene was a killer whale that went berserk and killed the trainer. Dawn Brancheau, 40, was the trainer who was killed.
Latest Update: A spokesman for SeaWorld in San Diego says its killer whale show has been suspended after a trainer was killed by a whale in Orlando, Fla. I believe all killer whale show around the nation will be suspended indefinitely.
Spokesman David Koontz said Wednesday he doesn’t know when the show will resume.
It is not clear if the killer whale show has been suspended at SeaWorld’s San Antonio location, which is closed until the weekend.
Here’s more info from CNN about how the killer whale kills the trainer:
A killer whale killed a trainer Wednesday afternoon at SeaWorld’s Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Florida, a public information officer for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.
The woman, 40, was in the whale holding area about 2 p.m. when “she apparently slipped or fell into the tank and was fatally injured by one of the whales,” Jim Solomons said.
A witness told CNN affiliate WKMG-TV that the whale approached the glass side of the 35-foot-deep tank at Shamu Stadium, jumped up and grabbed the trainer by the waist, shaking her so violently that her shoe came off.
SeaWorld probably will not release any video of the killer whale incident. But there’s a tourist home video that has been circulating on internet taping Dawn Brancheau during the show before the attack happens.
Due to the high traffic, please wait few seconds for the shamu attack video to load:
In 1999, Tillikum was blamed for the death of a 27-year-old man whose body was found floating on his back in a tank at SeaWorld, the apparent victim of a whale’s “horseplay,” authorities said then.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the man apparently hid in the park until after it closed and then climbed into the tank.
The 11,000-pound, 22-foot-long whale was “not accustomed to people being in his tank” and “wouldn’t have realized he was dealing with a very fragile human being,” Solomons said at the time.
“He may have been a victim of what a whale would call horseplay, just playing around,” Solomons said.
SeaWorld most likely won’t release any video regarding the killer whale incident but if they do, we’ll definitely post the link or the video.
Our deepest sympathy goes to Dawn Brancheau’s family.
Lilly: The 2-year-old World Map Master
by bintangkecil on Sunday, February 21st, 2010 | News, Weird, World | No Comments
Lilly Gaskin is only 26 months old and she is not old enough to really talk, but she has already mastered world geography. She can point out almost any country on a map, and she started doing this at 16 months.
According to her father James, Lilly’s amazing map reading ability came about by accident. “Lilly’s uncle went to Taiwan when she was 16 months old,” he explains. “And she wanted to know where he went. So we found a map and pointed to Taiwan. The next time she saw the map, she pointed to Taiwan.”
“We’ll point to a country she doesn’t know,” says James, “and then we’ll ask her where it is and she’ll point to it. Then we’ll ask her a couple more that she does know. Then we’ll go back to the one she didn’t know and she’s got it — takes 20 seconds!” And the rest is history! (Well, geography, really!)
World Speed Hugging Record: 7,777 Hugs in 24 hours on Valentine Day
by wildcherry on Sunday, February 14th, 2010 | News, Weird | No Comments
Jeff Ondash gives 7,777 Valentine’s hugs in 24 hours for a new world record of the most hugs in a 24 hours.
Jeff Ondash, who sought the squeezes under the costumed alter ego Teddy McHuggin, broke the record Saturday night outside the Paris Las Vegas hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
“When you hug somebody, they all walk away from each other smiling,” Ondash said. “They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away; a hug a day — it’s just fun.”
Ondash said he wanted to become the world’s hugging champion to raise money for the American Heart Association during American Heart month.
The cause is important to him because his brother and father both died relatively young because of heart problems, he said.
His daughter Carlie, who tallied her father’s hugs with a manual counter at the start of his attempt on Friday, came up with his pseudonym to make his spectacle a bit more fun. As Teddy McHuggin, Ondash sports a red NASCAR-style driver’s suit with hugging logos and a wrestling-style championship belt.
“Jeff Ondash breaking a record really doesn’t mean a lot,” he said. “Teddy McHuggin on the other hand, he’s the reigning world speed hugging champion, now going after the world marathon hugging champion.
“No one on earth has ever attempted something like that before,” he said.
Ondash, of Canfield, Ohio, already held the record for most hugs in one hour with 1,205, according to Guinness World Records.
The previous record of 5,000 hugs in one day was set last year by Siobhan O’Connor in Dublin, Ireland, Guinness spokesman Philip Robertson said.
To break O’Connor’s mark, Ondash needed more than 208 hugs per hour — or about 3 1/2 hugs per minute. Ondash logged just over 700 hugs during his first hour of embraces on Friday night.
He said he embraced all kinds of people throughout Friday night and Saturday and was tired from being on his feet and not eating. But Ondash said he wasn’t planning to go to sleep right away.
“I’m going to go and enjoy the town tonight,” he said Saturday.
Ondash said he did not expect Guinness World Records to certify his record for several weeks. The organization did not have a judge present at his attempt. Instead, independent judges who tracked Ondash in shifts were to submit affidavits to the organization.
Ondash says he, as McHuggin, is now eyeing both the world’s longest single hug — currently 24 hours and 1 second — and breaking his current two records consecutively, which he said was “unheard of.”
“I don’t even know if I can do that but I’m going to attempt it,” Ondash said. “It’s like climbing Mount Everest twice — same thing.”

When is “National Popcorn Day”? Today is!
I didn’t know there is such a day called “National Popcorn Day”.
National Popcorn Day is in January, yet another National Popcorn Month is October. According to tradition, it is celebrated on January 19th each year. There is some suggestion that Popcorn Day may, at one point, have been tied to the Superbowl.
What do you do on National Popcorn Day? I’m guessing you eat popcorn all day …?
