Boeing 787 Dreamliner finally takes off after 2-year delay
by bintangkecil on Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 | Business, News, Science, World | No Comments
The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner finally takes off, more than two years later than the company had planned. About 25,000 people braved the cold and damp to watch the 787 take off.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ new airplane is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a super-efficient airplane.
In addition to bringing big-jet ranges to mid-size airplanes, the 787 will provide airlines with unmatched fuel efficiency, resulting in exceptional environmental performance. The airplane will use 20 percent less fuel for comparable missions than today’s similarly sized airplane. It will also travel at speeds similar to today’s fastest wide bodies, Mach 0.85. Airlines will enjoy more cargo revenue capacity. Passengers will also see improvements with the new airplane, from an interior environment with higher humidity to increased comfort and convenience. Shares in Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) fell 0.6 percent to $55.74 after its long-awaited 787 Dreamliner took to the skies for the first time on Tuesday. The stock has risen 18 percent since the end of October and is up 30.5 percent so far this year.
Pilots Michael Carriker and Randall Neville lifted off in the big blue and white jet shortly after 10 a.m. PST from Everett’s Paine Field on a four-hour flight over Washington state, beginning the extensive flight test program needed to obtain the plane’s Federal Aviation Administration certification.
Watch a video of the Boeing’s 787 first flight below:
The plane is the first of six 787s Boeing will use in the flight test program, expected to last about nine months that will subject the planes to conditions well beyond those found in normal airline service. Chicago-based Boeing, which has orders for 840 787s, plans to make the first delivery to Japan’s All Nippon Airways late next year.
The 787 remains Boeing’s best-selling new plane to date, though some airlines have been forced to cancel or postpone purchase plans due to the weak global economy.
The version being tested will be able to fly up to 250 passengers about 9,000 miles. A stretch version will be capable of carrying 290 passengers and a short-range model up to 330.

U2 360 Tour Concert at Giants Stadium schedule
by wildcherry on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 | Entertainment, Love, News, Travel | No Comments
U2 has to reschedule a show planned for Giants Stadium next month. Publicists for U2 said that the group’s concert scheduled at the stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., for Sept. 25 has been moved to Sept. 23. The change was made after the New York Jets rescheduled their Sept. 27 football game to 1 p.m. from 4:15 p.m. to avoid a conflict with Yom Kippur, which starts at sundown that day. In their release, U2’s publicists said that the staging installation for the band’s tour requires up to two days to disassemble, and that the new time for the game made that process “logistically impossible.”

Support Earth Hour 2009! (March 28 8:30pm)
by wildcherry on Thursday, March 26th, 2009 | News, World | No Comments

Earth Hour is a global event taking place on Saturday 28 March 2009, when people, businesses and iconic buildings around the world will switch off their lights for an hour at 8.30pm local time - making a statement to the world’s governments for more urgent and effective action on climate change.
This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.
We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

Who is exactly Joe The Plumber?
by wildcherry on Thursday, October 16th, 2008 | News, World | No Comments

The whole world is wondering today: “Who IS Joe the Plumber?” the everyman voter made famous in the final presidential debate last night for being referenced repeatedly by John McCain and addressed directly at one point by Barack Obama.
Cable news gave the impression that the man is just Samuel “average Joe” Wurzelbacher, from Holland, Ohio, who is looking to expand his business and believes that Barack Obama’s proposed tax plan will actually cause him to lose money if he does so. He put his question on taxes to Obama in person while the Illinois Senator was canvassing in the Toledo suburb on Sunday. Plumber Joe later said Obama “tap dance[d] … almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.” in the conversation and implied in an interview after the debate that he would vote for John McCain.
It might be heartening to McCain to know that he has at least one vote in Democratic stronghold Lucas County, Ohio, but for one small fact. A download of the Lucas County voter rolls from the Ohio Secretary of State’s website lists four Wurzelbachers, two in Holland, but none of them named Sam or Joe or Samuel Joseph. There’s a Robert Lee and a Frank Edward Wurzelbacher, but no Joe.
Apparently, Joe the Plumber don’t vote.

In Toledo on Sunday, Wurzelbacher told Obama that he was preparing the company, which earns more than $250,000 a year, and said: “Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?”
Obama said that under his proposal taxes on any revenue from $250,000 on down would stay the same, but that amounts above that level would be subject to a 39 percent tax, instead of the current 36 percent rate…
Wurzelbacher protested, saying he’s been a hardworking plumber for 15 years and why should he be taxed more… He said Obama’s reaction on the tax question left him feeling uneasy.
“I didn’t think much of it the first time I heard it,” Wurzelbacher said, adding that he still thinks Obama’s plan would keep him from buying the business.
Joe the Plumber makes a pretty convincing argument. He somehow managed to frame the debate over Obama’s economic plan in a way that John McCain and a battalion of GOP strategists have been unable to in the past several months? That’s pretty impressive.
