Nokia sues Apple for 10 Patents Infringement

Nokia has sued Apple for infringing no less than ten patents “for GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards.”
The patents iclude speech coding, wireless data, encryption and security, and Nokia claims that they have been infringed by all of Apple’s iPhones – starting with the 2.5G model launched in 2007. Nokia states that all the 10 patents have already been licensed to 40 companies around the world, including the major vendors.
Ilkka Rahnasto, the Vice President of Nokia says:
“The Basic Principle In The Mobile Industry Is That Those Companies Who Contribute In Technology Development To Establish Standards Create Intellectual Property, Which Others Then Need To Compensate For. Apple Is Also Expected To Follow This Principle. By Refusing To Agree Appropriate Terms For Nokia’s Intellectual Property, Apple Is Attempting To Get A Free Ride On The Back Of Nokia’s Innovation.”
Nokia’s complaint against Apple was filed with the Federal District Court in Delaware, US. If Nokia’s claims turn out to be true, Apple will probably have to pay a lot of money to the Finnish company.
Apple Reported a 46% Increase In Its Earnings

Apple Inc. on Monday reported a 46% increase in its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings as the company posted higher revenue than a year ago led by better-than-expected sales of iPhones, Mac computers and iPods.
Apple said it earned $1.67 billion, or $1.82 a share, on revenue of $9.87 billion. During the same period a year ago, Apple earned $1.14 billion, or $1.26 a share, on $7.9 billion in sales.
Apple’s results topped the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters, who had forecast the company to earn $1.42 a share on revenue of $9.2 billion.
The initial reaction to Apple’s report was strong enough to send the company’s shares up more than $12, or as much as 6.5%, in after-hours trading to $202.20 after earlier rising $1.81 a share in the regular market session.
The company sold 7.4 million iPhones during the quarter ended Sept. 26. It was the first full quarter of sales for the iPhone 3GS, Apple’s latest version of its touchscreen smartphone that starts at $199. Analysts were expecting iPhone sales of 7 million, on average.
Apple also said it sold more than 3 million Macs during the quarter, thanks in part to the back-to-school selling season. Mac shipments increased by 17% from the same period a year ago. Analysts had been expecting Mac sales of 2.8 million. During the quarter, Apple released Snow Leopard, the latest upgrade to its Mac operating system.
“It was a strong, strong quarter,” said Shaw Wu, who covers Apple for Kaufman Bros. “[The] big upside was driven by Macs and iPhones. This was amazing despite very high expectations, and we’re still in the middle of a recession.”
The company said it sold 10.2 million iPods during the quarter, which was an 8% decline in shipments from the year-ago period. However, those results still exceeded the 10-million shipment figure that was expected from many Wall Street analysts.
Gross margins as a percentage of revenue climbed to 36.6% from 34.7% in the same quarter last year.
New Apple iPod touch 3rd Generation w Camera
by wildcherry on Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 | News, Tech/Gadget | No Comments

This is how the iPod Touch will look like :P. Lol Jkdin. Pict from Gizmodo.
The iPod Touch 3rd generation is expected to be released tomorrow. It will have a camera that allows you to take pictures and videos. The new iPod Touch 3rd generation will also have faster speeds than the current iPod Touch.
An extensive series of photos accompanied by a video claim to show the new upcoming iPod touch, complete with camera, expected to be announced at Apple’s anticipated media event “Rock and Roll”.
Before the Event, Apple went ahead and chopped the price of its entire iPod Touch line by as much as $120. Also: price cuts for the Nano, Classic.
Apple iPod touch 32 GB —formerly $399, or a whopping $110 more than the upcoming 32GB version of the competing Zune HD—now sells for $279, a $120 discount that slightly undercuts the new Zune.
Meanwhile, the Apple iPod touch 16 GB got a $50 price cut to $249—cheaper , but still $30 more than the 16GB Zune HD (which is slated to go on sale next week; check out my hands-on impressions). Finally, the Apple iPod touch 8 GB got a $40 haircut, to $189 from $229
The iPod Touch wasn’t the only iPod model to get a price cut. Apple also trimmed the price tag of its iPod Nano players by $50 for the 16GB version (was $199, now $149) and $20 for the 8GB device (was $149, now $129). Also cheaper: the venerable, 120GB iPod Classic, now $229 after a $20 price cut.
Steve Jobs at the Apple Event Wednesday did appear, did speak, and got huge applause.
Jobs drew praise as he discussed Apple iPhone sales for 2009.
GearLog reports live with photos of Jobs HERE. Steve told a packed house:
“I now have the liver of a mid-20’s person who died in a car crash and I wouldn’t be here without that person’s generosity–I hope we all become organ donors….I’d like to thanks Tim Cook for running the show in my absence. So, I’m vertical and back at Apple.”
Jobs said 30,000 more ringtones are being added, $1.29 per ringtone, as iTunes drives sales in 23 countries. Jobs also discussed new bug fixes on iPhone OS 3.1. Jobs added:
“I’m very happy to be here today with you all, 5 months ago I had a liver transplant.”
“Overall, the iPhone remains the best selling device and our August checks indicate the iPhone took share from BlackBerry, the Nokia E71x, and most other competitor products.”
