San Diego was hit by a 5-8 earthquake

by bintangkecil on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009 | News, World | No Comments

A magnitude-5.8 earthquake in northern Baja California rocked the U.S.-Mexico border region Wednesday at 10:49am, causing buildings to sway more than 100 miles to the west in downtown San Diego.

The main quake was centered about 20 miles southeast of the Mexican border city of Mexicali, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed quickly by a 4.9 quake and other aftershocks.

San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Anthony Ray said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

There was no immediate information from Mexicali or authorities on the U.S. side of the border in Imperial County. Phone circuits were busy just after the quake.

Two smaller quakes preceded the main shock, which was initially reported at magnitude-5.9 before being downgraded slightly.

The quake occurred 4.3 miles deep and is considered shallow. Shallower quakes have the potential to cause more damage than deeper ones, Dutton said.

3.7-magnitude Earthquake before 20th anniversary of Loma Prieta quake

by wildcherry on Tuesday, October 13th, 2009 | News, World | No Comments

A 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck just south of Pleasanton Tuesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to the USGS, the earthquake hit shortly before 8:30 p.m. and was centered two miles north-northeast of Sunol and three miles
south of Pleasanton. It was reported as having a depth of 5 miles.

Officials from the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and the Pleasanton Police Department said there were no reports of injury or damage, just some curious callers wondering if there was an earthquake.

The quake comes just four days before the Bay Area observes the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, which was 6.9 magnitude and severely damaged the San Francisco and Monterey Bay regions.

Ironically enough considering Tuesday’s temblor, more than 810,000 Bay Area residents, including more than 201,000 in Alameda County, will participate in the largest earthquake drill ever on Thursday.

Modeled after last year’s program in Southern California that had more than 5 million participants, the Great California Shakeout marks the Loma Prieta anniversary. Students and staff at Pleasanton schools and the district offices are said to be participating at that time with duck-and-cover and evacuation drills, similar to those that schools are required to do throughout the year.

October 17, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. At Stanford University, a panel of experts will reflect on what happened in 1989, the likely impact of future Bay Area earthquakes, progress in earthquake science and engineering, how the Bay Area can become more earthquake resilient, and earthquake preparedness.
