‘Sun-Maid girl’ Makeover

by nate on Friday, December 4th, 2009 | Business, Design, News | No Comments

Sun-Maid recently decided to join Betty Crocker, Aunt Jemima and Mrs. Butterworth’s in giving the female face of their product a substantial makeover from a young, early 20th-century girl into a buxom, modern young woman, leading some to say that the newly made-over raisin girl looks like a Barbie Doll in Amish attire.

Since 1915, the face of Sun-Maid has been Lorraine Collett Petersen, who, according to the company’s website , “was discovered drying her black hair curls in the sunny backyard of her parents’ home in Fresno, California.” Petersen was then asked to pose for a watercolor painting holding a basket of grapes while wearing a sunbonnet. In the years since, the company has tweaked its trademark design occasionally to keep up with the times, but every variation has always been based on the original pose by Petersen. The new computer-animated version of the Sun-Maid girl currently featured in television advertisements is a departure from the classic design that harkened back to a time when “life was much simpler, more rural, a lot less hectic.”
Naturally, the revamped look hasn’t gone unnoticed, rankling both ends of the political spectrum. The blog for conservative magazine The Weekly Standard noted that the new Sun-Maid girl looks “as if Julia Roberts decided to don a red bonnet and start picking grapes,” while the feminist website Jezebel.com remarked that it looks as if she’s had “some implants.”

Eating Any of These 8 Foods Would Combat Fat

by nate on Thursday, November 12th, 2009 | Health, Life, Tips | 1 Comment

Almonds

Almond joy! Dieters who ate 3 ounces of these nuts every day reduced their weight and body-mass index by a solid 18 percent compared with an 11 percent drop in the no-nut group, a study in the International Journal of Obesity found. Almonds are high in alpha-linolenic acid, which can speed the metabolism of fats. Stick to 12 per serving.

Berries

Vitamin C–loaded fruit such as strawberries and raspberries can help you sizzle up to 30 percent more fat during exercise, suggests research from Arizona State University at Mesa. Blend a vinaigrette of 1 cup berries and ¼ cup balsamic vinegar.

Cinnamon

This spice could make your waistline nice. Sprinkling ¼ teaspoon on your food may prevent a post-meal insulin spike—this increase normally occurs after you eat and “signals the body that it should store fat rather than burn it,” explains Lauren Slayton, R.D., of New York City. Add a dash to your oatmeal, yogurt or coffee.

Mustard

Hello, yellow. The spice that gives mustard its color, turmeric, may slow the growth of fat tissues, a study in the journal Endocrinology notes. Eighty-six mayo in favor of any mustard; sprinkle turmeric on cauliflower and roast for a tangy side.

Oranges

Prevent pound creep with this citrus star: It contains fat-torching compounds called flavones. Women who ate the most flavones had a significantly lower increase in body fat over a 14-year period, a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds. Snack on slices or drink freshly squeezed OJ (with pulp!) for the biggest payback.

Soybeans

These green gems are rich in choline, a compound that blocks fat absorption and breaks down fatty deposits. Add ½ cup edamame to a salad.

Sweet Potatoes

Trade up to sweet taters. They’re high in fiber, which means no drastic insulin jumps and thus less fat packed onto your hips. Bake a small sweet potato—think of two bars of soap as a portion size—and top with a dollop of low-fat or nonfat cottage cheese.

Swiss cheese

Holy cow: “Calcium-rich foods reduce fat-producing enzymes and increase fat breakdown,” says Michael B. Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Put toe to toe with some of its cheesy counterparts, Swiss is a heavy hitter in the calcium department; layer a slice on a lunchtime sandwich or stack some on high-fiber crackers.

The Movie: Chicken a la Carte

by nate on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 | Entertainment, Inspiration, Knowledge, Life | 3 Comments

I don’t know if you guys have heard about this movie, “Chicken Ala Carte”. I am not sure either whether you realize that this movie is based on a true story or or just an exaggerated movie. We, who live in the developed countries, often complain a lot about the taste of the food, the look of the food presentation, and just the smell of the food served. One time, I watched this program called “Hell’s kitchen” where one of the chef has the back of the cabbage served in the salad. Thus, the Chef Ramsey (the chef leader) got really mad and would throw good food to trash, just because the food wasn’t prepared well, or doesn’t taste as good as he expected. Well, I can say it’s a different situation, however, when we look through different perspective; food could be the very precious thing that some people need to survive.

And for those who doubt the truth behind this movie; for sure I lived in a country where this condition is happening. I am not only sharing about hunger, but in addition to that, their mentality, especially children. If you ask yourself, maybe you’ll find an answer of,” I can’t do anything for these children.” Instead, I would say,” Let’s appreciate every gifts from above, hold each other hand and share love with people around you.” Who knows those people whom you touch are able to create a link to help those cute children and giving them a hope. Or at the very least we can do from watching this clip is to learn the laugh and spiritual happiness from these children.

Global Food Crisis will starve 200 million people

by wildcherry on Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 | News, World | No Comments

The crisis currently gripping the world economy will likely cause an additional 200 million people to fall into “absolute poverty,” warns an international coalition of trade unions.

Over 850 million people worldwide are at risk due to the food crisis, and half of the 10 million people who die of hunger each year are children. Rising fuel costs, erratic weather patterns, and the conversion of land to grow crops for biofuels are all factors in the global food crisis. Rising incomes in poorer countries have also increased food demand in recent years, diminishing global reserves.

Last week, 183 faith, farm, food, hunger, and international development groups from around the world appealed to U.S. President Barack Obama to protect hundreds of millions of people from the global food crisis by preventing price speculation in commodity markets. The 2008 food price instability “could have been stopped with sensible rules that, if enforced, would have staved off the malnutrition and starvation that was caused by excessive gambling of food prices,” states the letter. “Important reforms are needed now to prevent mega-investors from viewing the futures market like a casino where they can gamble on hunger.”

Why is the Global Food Crisis Happening?

by wildcherry on Friday, March 13th, 2009 | Knowledge, Life | 5 Comments

Africa food crisis

The World Food Program calls the global food crisis a phenomenon, a “silent tsunami,” that is affecting families in every nation on every continent. Food prices for popular menu items like rice, wheat and beans have doubled in the last year. Though increases in food prices have hit all budgets, it’s the poor who bear the brunt of price inflation. The higher prices are forcing people who survive on just $1 a day to spend upwards of 80 percent of their budgets just on food. As a result, many people, including millions of children, are going hungry. The longer food prices rise, the more people will be plunged into hunger and poverty.

Why is the global food crisis happening?

Food shortages have affected developing countries for generations. It’s a cyclical problem. But this global food crisis is more rapid, urgent and devastating. Since 2005, food prices have risen a whopping 80 percent. Why?

* rising fuel costs
* rising food demand from populous nations like India and China
* natural disasters destroying crop yields all over the world, including the United States
* growth of biofuels

Genetically Modified Fruits & Veggies

by wildcherry on Thursday, March 5th, 2009 | Knowledge, Life | 1 Comment

montagefruitvegg-copy

Genetically modified food is one of great controversies of our time. Supporters point to wonderful possibilities of nutrient-packed food and solving world hunger, while critics fear unknown effects on human health. But whatever one’s opinion the matter, one thing is clear: some genetically modified fruits and vegetables are awfully intriguing! Here are 7 of the most interesting examples:

Graisins

graisin

(Image via Elanso)

The graisin (or giant raisin) is a raisin which has been genetically re-programmed to grow far beyond its normal size. It was produced by Japan’s National Institute of Genetics, which is unsurprising given that nation’s love for large fruits of all kinds. And while they taste exactly the same as small raisins, graisins are sure to make dinner guests stare in awe!

Grapples

Originally funded by UNICEF and created for Third World aid efforts, a grapple is simply a genetic cross between a grape and an apple. The fruit keeps the size and shape of the apple, the texture of the grape, and the flavor of both while providing a potent, high-strength dose of vitamin C.

Pluots

Plums and apricots are delicious fruits in their own right, but combined, they form the genetically modified treat known as the pluot. Described by WiseGeek as “an intensely flavored fruit”, pluots are heavily fortified with vitamin C and have no sodium or cholesterol.

Tangelo

“Should I have a tangerine or a grapefruit?” No longer need this question be asked! Lovers of each fruit can now get the best of both worlds with this sweet hybrid, which boasts a ton of fiber, vitamin C, and a slightly tart taste!

Colorful carrots

Could colorful, genetically-modified carrots like those pictured here be the secret to absorbing more calcium? Two Texas researchers say yes - and they’ve created a carrot they claim allows people to absorb 40% more calcium than normal carrots to back up their claims!

Diabetes-fighting lettuce

Diabetes is one of the most frustrating and life-threatening illnesses out there. Living with it (at minimum) means daily, sometimes painful insulin injections - until now. University of Central Florida professor Henry Daniell has created a genetically modified strain of lettuce (pictured above) that carries the insulin gene. The lettuce cells protect the insulin on its journey through the digestive tract, and when the insulin reaches the intestines, the body’s natural insulin-producing response is triggered.

Lematos

Okay, so a lemon and a tomato aren’t the most natural of pairs, but that didn’t stop Israeli researchers from bringing us the Lemato! Unlike other genetically altered fruits and veggies (which were created primarily for health reasons), it appears that the lemato was solely an experiment to determine if it was possible to make tomatos give off the scent of lemons. Mission accomplished!
