In 1985, Justin Bieber was nine years from being born, Auto-Tune was 12 years from being invented, and Lil Wayne turned 3. Yet all three are prominent on “We Are the World: 25 For Haiti,” a remake of the 1985 charity single that will benefit relief efforts in earthquake-stricken Haiti.
The video of “We are the World: 25 for Haiti” premiered Friday night (February 12) during the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The new incarnation of the 1985 song sticks closely to the arrangement of the original, but the cast is much larger and, of course, much more contemporary.
The updated version of “We Are the World” not only has a completely different cast than its predecessor — only the late Michael Jackson remains, with his sister Janet singing along to his vocal tracks from the original — its sound is very current
On television, the song was introduced by a message from original “We Are the World” principals Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones, who urged viewers to contribute via World25.org, iTunes or by texting “World” to 50555.
That version is introduced by Jamie Foxx, who sets the scene, talking about the original recording and then the new version, the video of which was directed by “Crash” director Paul Haggis. “Do more than just watch,” Foxx says. “Whatever you have, no matter how big or how small, it all counts.”
The video features footage from the song’s recording session intercut with scenes of rebuilding efforts in Haiti. Justin Bieber opens, singing Lionel Richie’s verse from the original, and is quickly followed by Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Hudson singing together, then Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles, Josh Groban, and then footage of Michael Jackson from the original recording superimposed with sister Janet duetting on the first verse of the chorus. Barbra Streisand, Fergie, a wailing Celine Dion and others follow.
Michael Jackson’s This Is It wins weekend box office with $21.3 million

Halloween audiences picked beats over blood this weekend, pushing “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” to the top spot, while horror phenomenon “Paranormal Activity” scored a strong second-place finish.
With a $21.3 million domestic gross, “This Is It” raised its worldwide total to a massive $101 million that easily breaks the record for a concert doc, though it falls far short of the $250 million that concert promoter AEG reportedly predicted.
Even so, the performance was good enough to convince distributor Sony (which acquired the pic for a mere $60 million) to announce that the concert pic will remain in theaters at least until Thanksgiving.
Still beating expectations in its third wide-release weekend, the sleeper hit “Paranormal Activity” dropped just 22 percent for a $16.5 million haul. At $84.8 million total after six weekends, the surprise smash is now the year’s highest grossing horror movie.
Rounding out the top five are holdovers “Law Abiding Citizen” ($7.3 million), “Couples Retreat,” ($6.1 million), and “Saw VI” ($5.6 million).
The weekend’s two other newbies both had lukewarm receptions in wide release: “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” made $0.5 million at 68 theaters, while “Gentlemen Broncos” earned $10,000 at two sites.

Attorneys for the singer’s mother filed papers under seal late Tuesday asking that the estate foot the bill for the funeral she has planned. Burt Levitch, Katherine Jackson’s attorney, said outside of court that he did not find the expenses extraordinary. The bulk of the cost was going to the fee for Jackson to be interred at the cemetery, Levitch said. There, Jackson will be laid to rest amid lavish decorations, including statues and stained glass windows. Forensic tests found the powerful anesthetic propofol acted together with at least two sedatives to cause Jackson’s death, the official said.
The warrant, dated July 23, states that lethal levels of propofol were found in Jackson’s system. Besides the propofol and two sedatives, the coroner’s toxicology report found other substances in Jackson’s system but they were not believed to have been a factor in the singer’s death, the official said. Murray has spoken to police and last week released a video saying he “told the truth and I have faith the truth will prevail.” His attorney, Edward Chernoff, had no immediate comment but has previously said Murray never administered anything that “should have” killed Jackson. A call to the coroner’s office was not returned Monday. Murray did not say anything about the drugs he gave to Jackson. Yet after selling more than 61 million albums in the U.S. and having a decade-long attraction open at Disney theme parks, the “King of Pop” died Thursday at age 50 reportedly awash in about $400 million in debt, on the cusp of a final comeback after well over a decade of scandal. The moonwalking pop star drove the growth of music videos, vaulting cable channel MTV into the popular mainstream after its launch in 1981. His 1982 hit “Thriller,” still the second best-selling U.S. album of all time, spawned a John Landis-directed music video that MTV played every hour on the hour. “The ratings were three or four times what they were normally every time the video came on,” said Judy McGrath, the chairman and CEO of Viacom Inc.’s MTV Networks. “He was inextricably tied to the so-called MTV generation.” Five years later, “Bad” sold 22 million copies. In 1991, he signed a $65 million recording deal with Sony. Jackson was so popular that The Walt Disney Co. hitched its wagon to his star in 1986, opening a 3-D movie at its parks called “Captain EO,” executive produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The last attraction in Paris closed 12 years later. One of Jackson’s shrewdest deals at the height of his fame in 1985 was the $47.5 million acquisition of ATV Music, which owned the copyright to songs written by the Beatles’ John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The catalog provided Jackson a steady stream of income and the ability to afford a lavish lifestyle. He bought the sprawling Neverland ranch in 1988 for $14.6 million, a fantasy-like 2,500-acre property nestled in the hills of Santa Barbara County’s wine country. But the bombshell hit in 1993 when he was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy. “That kind of represents the beginning of the walk down a tragic path, financially, emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, legally,” said Michael Levine, his publicist at the time. He settled with the boy’s family, but other accounts of his alleged pedophilia began to emerge. When he ran into further financial problems, he agreed to a deal with Sony in 1995 to merge ATV with Sony’s library of songs and sold Sony music publishing rights for $95 million. Then in 2001, he used his half of the ATV assets as collateral to secure $200 million in loans from Bank of America. As his financial problems continued, Jackson began to borrow large sums of money, according to a 2002 lawsuit by Union Finance & Investment Corp. that sought $12 million in unpaid fees and expenses. He was 50. Jackson arrived at the hospital in a deep coma following a heart attack, the Times said. The paper said Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at Jackson’s home around 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The paramedics performed CPR as he was en route to the medical center, which is only a few minutes away from Jackson’s rented BelAir home. Reportedly, he never regained consciousness.
It is too early to tell, however, the exact reasons behind the 50-year-old Jackson’s death. Undiagnosed heart disease is the leading underlying cause of cardiac arrest. However, other risk factors like a family history of the condition, previous heart attack or heart failure, and drug abuse or excessive alcohol intake can increase the risk of its occurence. Celebrity Web site TMZ.com, which was the first to report of Jackson’s death, said LaToya Jackson was seen running from the hospital, sobbing. It was reported Jackson’s mother and at least some of his brothers were present. Father Joe Jackson, who was the driving force behind the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson’s early singing career, was reportedly in Las Vegas. Jackson’s death came less than a month before the start of a scheduled series of so-called comeback concerts. Michael Jackson’s burial will finally take place at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale on Thursday. The funeral begins at 7 p.m.
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County coroner has ruled Michael Jackson’s death a homicide, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press, a finding that makes it more likely criminal charges will be filed against the doctor who was with the pop star when he died.
Dr. Conrad Murray, a Las Vegas cardiologist who became Jackson’s personal physician weeks before his death, is the target of a manslaughter investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department. According to a search warrant affidavit unsealed Monday in Houston, Murray told investigators he administered a 25 mg dose of propofol around 10:40 a.m. after spending the night injecting Jackson with two sedatives in an unsuccessful attempt to get him to sleep.
TMZ reports that Applied Pharmacy Services, LLC was sued by the owners of the building it occupied in Pasadena, CA. for non-payment of rent. The landlord got a judgment of $143,267.73 — that includes around $40,000 in back rent plus the amount that would have paid through the balance of the lease, which ended in September, 2011. The pharmacy abandoned the lease in September, 2008.
